Cabernet Franc is a relative of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. However, unlike the warmer growing climate and thick skin of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc is a thin skinned grape that grows best in cooler climates. One of the five primary Bordeaux varietals, Cabernet Franc has been grown with success in the main wine growing regions of the world. France has the most plantings with over 35,000 acres, most in St. Emilion and the Loire Valley. California has about 2,000 acres in comparison, with half of those in Sonoma and Napa Valley.
Cabernet Franc has a lighter color and lower tannin levels than Cabernet Sauvignon and more distinct berry flavors of blueberry, raspberry and plum, producing a fruity wine that is softer and more subdued. Although under certain conditions, Cabernet Franc can contain more vegetal and herbal flavors. These attributes makes it the ideal blending grape as it has been for decades.
There are a limited number of wineries that are seeing the potential of Cabernet Franc on its own. Cabernet Franc is capable of producing elegant red wines with light, but noticeable tannins, and black fruit and berry flavors. The wines are approachable when young and tend to achieve balance of fruit, tannin and acidity without being overly oaky and full of alcohol.
